When school is out and the sun is shining, you know it’s time for a family vacation! However, in tough economic times, it may seem impossible to get the entire family on a trip this year.   1. Plan ahead. You need to start planning now – even if your vacation isn’t for another three or four months. The farther out you start to plan, the better deals you will find for hotels, airfare, amusement parks, etc.
  2. Think local. Perhaps a vacation to another state or country is completely out of the question, but that doesn’t mean fun has to be. Go ahead and have a “stay-cation.” Look around your city and see what there is that you can explore. You may have a waterpark, museum, or musical activities going on in or around your home town that you never knew about before.
  3. Search the Internet. You can find some really great travel deals on the Internet. Search for the best deals for hotels and airfare online. Be sure to compare several sites and services so you can make sure you are saving the most money.
  4. Pack your meals. One of the biggest expenses on a vacation is meal time. If you have children you are traveling with, feel free to pack your meals along with you. Many hotel rooms have microwaves and a refrigerator, so you should be able to plan meals.
  5. Look into vacation rentals. Vacation rentals are often much cheaper than hotel rooms, plus they offer a lot more room. Check for a vacation rental before you book a hotel.

Unhappy with the education system available in this country, many parents are opting for homeschooling their kids. The problem is many of these parents don’t really feel qualified to teach today’s youth, especially if their background is not in education. So what are these parents doing?

One way these parents are ensuring their teens an education is through online schools. These schools have teachers that work with the students and there are even other students in the classroom. The difference is the flexibility that these students are provided by having classes online; they can choose what classes to take and when to take them. This also allows the students to go at their own pace, which is helpful for exceptional students (i.e. those that are gifted as well as those who have struggles with learning).

Benefits of Online Schools

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, online schools provide other benefits. For one thing, many students are able to get through the curriculum at a faster pace, allowing these teens to finish high school early. Once high school is completed, they can move onto working on a bachelor degree. This can also be done online, so the student doesn’t have to leave home in order to start college. This is a huge advantage for students who are still only 16 or 17 years old and aren’t ready to live on their own.

The Internet has opened many opportunities up to these students that did not exist 20 years ago.

American Girl Dolls Are Educational

American Girl dolls are the envy and desire of many young girls across the United States. Although many moms and dads out there know all about these dolls, there are many who don’t. These moms and dads may not be aware of the highly educational aspect of these dolls.

American Girl dolls were founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland. The dolls are all based on a young girl, around the age of ten. Each doll depicts a girl character living in a certain time period in the United States from a specific ethnic or cultural background.

The American Girl dolls are educational in many ways. They provide an insight into a different way of life through the depiction of the dolls:

Child rearing is one of those crazy things in life. While most people will spend as much money as it takes to get their child to a point of being self-sufficient, some parents simply don’t have the means other parents do. Perhaps it’s partly circumstance, and perhaps it’s partly an internal cap some people put on themselves, but money can be a big deal. How much does it really take, luxuries aside, to raise a child?

If you can answer that financial question, you could probably also take home the Nobel Prize for Economics. While you might not be able to objectively answer how much it takes to raise a child, everyone has their opinions. One of them is that it costs roughly as much as the parents can muster, meaning they will put everything they can toward their child’s eventual success. There are even websites devoted to estimating the costs of raising a child, though this is still only an educated guess.

Wthholding Luxuries

When your child or teen does something unacceptable, you have a lot of different options when it comes to disciplining them. You can obviously use physical violence, but that’s rather crude. It also hasn’t been shown to be especially effective at doing anything but making them become either afraid and skittish or violent and rebellious. You can also take a page from more adult methods of punishment, and withhold some of your child’s luxury items from them.

While luxury is a relative term, no one needs the latest tech toys. Such items may be sparkly and fun to show off and play with, but every generation that came before didn’t have them, and somehow managed to muddle through and make something of themselves. In this day and age, such things tend to be seen as an entitlement that everyone needs to have. Because of this silly notion, there is no better way to positively lay down the law than to remove those tech toys from your child’s hot little hands. This sends a message no words ever could.

As well as the toys themselves, you can also eliminate the ability to use the car whenever your child wants. While teens tend to love driving, even younger kids tend to take being chauffered around by their parents for granted. If you take that away and make them walk to whatever fun events they want to attend, this will hammer home that yours is the final say within your household. While some parents might consider that cruel and unusual, unusual things tend to work especially well. Plus, no one ever said you need to go to concerts.

Teaching Your Teen Responsibility

As your child grows older, you want to help them understand how to be responsible. To push your teens to become the responsible adults you know they can be, consider using these ideas to help them become responsible when they are young.

First, consider getting one of the cricket cell phones for your teens. As a prepaid phone, your teens will learn how to communicate effectively with you, as well as how to be responsible with the privilege of a cell phone, without you getting stuck with an insurmountable phone bill at the end of the month. As the parent buying the package for the phone, you get the final say about what cell phone plan your teen gets. As your teens progress, you can upgrade them to a phone plan that includes a data plan and internet for an android or blackberry.

Second, give your teens an emergency credit card with a low maximum. If your teen respects it, they can keep it. If your teen immediately spends all of the credit on unnecessary things, than you may need to take the card away.

Finally, you can help your teen learn responsibility by giving them a list of household tasks. Even when they are young, they should be helping around the house with household chores. Once your children are older, you can pass off other chores to see how they handle the new task. Consider putting them in charge of their own laundry, or requiring them to clean their own bathroom. Whatever you do, giving your teens responsibility will help them become the responsible adults you hope they will be.

The Terible Twos: Quite a Milestone

There are numerous milestones in a child’s life, but none are quite as memorable as the age between roughly two and roughly four years old. This is known as the terrible two’s, because this is the first time your child will assert its will and seriously test yours. While most children will frequently test their parents throughout life, this is the most raging period for this kind of challenge, because this is when they learn what you’ll put up with.

A child will test you in innumerable ways, and you have to pass these tests through absolutely indomitable willpower. If you don’t, your child is going to walk all over you for years to come. A lot of parents secretly wish they’d been harder on their kids when they were two later on, because they child will then go on to do more of whatever they were allowed to get away with. It takes years to train a child you gave in to early on, and the process is painful for you and them.

If you are consistent all the way through your child’s childhood, they will most likely grow up to be an equally consistent adult. Rather like when you mix up concrete or feed a plant, what you put into a child is what the world is going to get out of him or her. They don’t raise themselves, and you have to be the adult in this situation. When they’re toddlers, you need to be extra stern, so you don’t have to be later on in their lives. If you act weak, you’ll be regretting it for years.
